About

The Box

Goth & Industrial on 2 dance floors

The Blue Lagoon, 923 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA

Ages 21+

The Box was established in 1998/1999 by DJs Magus (Yarry Gonzales), Effendi (Aaron Rhodes) and Tripp (Yuma).

Its name originates from the 1987 horror film Hellraiser, in which an antique puzzle box (Lemarchand’s Box) opens a gateway to hell when solved. In recent years, it we have evolved away from the Hellraiser origins.

The Box originally began as a monthly club, but became weekly within its first year. DJ Tripp was the first member to withdraw, and was replaced by Sean “Gobo” Keily, who had been friends with DJ Magus before the Box began. DJs Julian, Disconnect and Syndael began DJing. In the last few months of 2007, DJ Gobo told everyone that he had “come down with a touch of the Leukemia,” and Gobo passed the Box into the hands of DJs Julian and Disconnect. After battling Lymphoma and Leukemia, he passed away on Friday the 13th, 2008.

Today, the Box continues to play Goth, Industrial, Darkwave, EBM, Post-Industrial, 80s, and other styles. The club is now 2 rooms and generally keeps the goth music in the front and the industrial in the back, with some cross-over.

Current Resident DJs include:
